Sense Hunting with Creative Remix

Feeling trees & listening to leaves

On July 4 we had the pleasure to lead a group of 30 eager young people in an exploration of sense around Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre. As guest instructors at the annual Creative Remix camp, we had a group that was open to doing just about anything.

Discovering smells and feels of flowers in the Moberly garden

After introducing the group to maps and charts of all sorts, we started off our sense exploration by discovering what we could observe about...blueberries! Sure they were blue (or were they?) and they taste like a blueberry (which is how, exactly?), but what do they feel and sound like? We learned that blueberries were multiple colours, from white/green to light purple to blue-black, that some are firm but get squishy when you touch them too much, that it's hard to say how they sound, and that they taste sweet and tangy and sour and also, like blueberries.

What does an alley sound like?

Everything is more fun under a giant tree

Armed with keen senses of observation, we set out on a discovery walk through the neighbourhood. We learned that plants are fuzzy and soft, almost everything has a smell, airplanes are loud (but not as loud as cars), and that everything is better beneath a giant tree.

Sharing blackberries and smelling sticks!

Upon returning to Moberly, everyone worked to document what they had discovered by making maps, charts, and collages of found materials. The result was a creative mix of everything.

So many things were felt and heard, seen and smelled!
